The Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department (GHAVFD) has an historically small call volume annually, but many of the incidents can and have been dramatic, large events. In addition to medical and fire calls, the busy time is during the summer when the population of the entire Estes Valley is impacted by the tourist season, which may bring 3 million visitors to the area in a 4-month period. EMS, Haz Mat, Motor Vehicle Accidents, Search and Rescue and the standard calls create a busy season for the GHAVFD and wildland fires complicate the mix. Approximately 500 cabins and homes now inhabit the 5 mountain stream sides, meadows and hillsides in the area. The beautiful mountains surrounding Glen Haven provide locals and summer tourists remote camping, hiking and fishing opportunities. Rocky Mountain National Park and the Comanche Peaks Wilderness Area are easily accessed from several trails in and around Glen Haven. The GHAVFD Department is a critical part of the emergency response community throughout southern Larimer County. The Department works closely with the Colorado State Patrol, Larimer County Sheriff's Department, Larimer County Emergency Services, the U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain National Park, the Estes Valley Fire Protection District, Loveland Rural Fire Protection District, Estes Park Ambulance Service and other agencies to continue to provide emergency response to the Glen Haven community and the entire Estes Valley.
The mission of the Glen Haven Area Volunteer Fire Department (GHAVFD) is to provide a high level of fire suppression and emergency medical services within its service area. The GHAVFD continually sets goals to better serve the community and today the Department's EMT's and first responders continue to offer quality emergency medical intervention for local residents and visitors. The Department currently operates 7 pieces of apparatus out of two fire house locations with over 20 active volunteers. Each member undergoes extensive training, and uses a wide array of vehicles, equipment, clothing, and gear. This is accomplished with a total budget amounting to about what one career firefighter would earn in salary in one year. Purchase and maintenance of these items, and all other operational expenses, must be provided for in the yearly budget. GHAVFD is fully reliant on donations and grants, and the Duck Race adoption proceeds are an annual critical fundraiser for the department.
